Whole Person Treatment in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Whole-person addiction treatment in Minneapolis: outpatient care that treats the substance use, the mental health underneath it, and the life you are building around both.
Northwoods Haven Recovery treats the whole person, not the substance, for adults across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities, from our center in Hopkins. That means the drinking or drug use, the depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder, or ADHD that so often runs alongside it, and the sleep, relationships, work, and purpose that either hold a recovery up or quietly pull it down.
In-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica

What whole person treatment is
Treating the life the substance use was living inside of
Whole person treatment is the principle that a substance use disorder never exists on its own. It sits inside a body that may not be sleeping or eating well, a mind that may be carrying depression, anxiety, or the aftermath of trauma, relationships that have been strained or lost, a job or a lack of one, and a sense of what life is for that the substance has been standing in for. Treat only the substance and the rest stays as it was, which is a large part of why relapse is so common after abstinence-only treatment.
So the plan here is built across those areas rather than around a single goal. Mental health is treated alongside chemical dependency programming, with psychoeducation running through every group. Physical basics such as sleep, eating regularly, and moving your body are things you work on with your counselor, because a brain that is rested and fed handles cravings and mood far better than one that is not. Relationships, work, money, and what you want your days to hold are all material for individual counseling and group. None of this is a service we perform on you. It is work you do, with structure and people who understand.
At Northwoods Haven Recovery, whole person treatment is also a stance about who you are. We are inclusive of every belief system and every recovery approach, whether that is a 12-step fellowship, a secular path, a faith community, or something you assemble yourself. How you work your recovery is yours to define. The therapies we use, CBT, DBT skills, acceptance and commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing, are taught as options, not as a doctrine. And the relationship with your own licensed alcohol and drug counselor, unbroken from IOP through the Relapse Prevention Program, is where the pieces become one plan.
How it fits here
Whole person treatment is the frame for everything else. CBT, DBT skills, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care all run inside group and individual counseling at both levels of care. You do not choose one. Your counselor teaches you all of them.
Our space

What it covers
The parts of a life that a plan here takes seriously
Substance use is the reason you came. It is rarely the only thing that needs attention.
Individual
Mind and mood
Depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are treated alongside the substance use, not after it. If a medical provider prescribes medication for any of them, tell us during the assessment so your plan accounts for it.
Homework
Body basics
Sleep, regular meals, and daily movement are things you set goals around and report back on. Nobody here is a dietitian or a trainer. Your counselor helps you notice how the basics change your cravings and mood.
Skill
People and work
Repairing relationships, setting boundaries, handling the job or the job search, and rebuilding trust at home are practiced in group and worked through in individual counseling, with family involvement when you want it.
Mindset
Purpose and meaning
What you want your days to hold once the substance is not organizing them: routine, community, faith or no faith, work that matters, the recovery approach that fits you. Acceptance and commitment therapy gives this a method.
What it helps with
What whole person treatment helps with, and what the research says
Whole person treatment suits the situation almost everyone arrives in: a substance use disorder tangled up with something else. Alcohol and depression. Stimulants and ADHD. Opioids and pain and isolation. Cannabis and anxiety. Any substance and a trauma history. It also fits people who have been through treatment before and relapsed into a life that had not changed underneath them, and people who are sober by count but miserable, with the sleep, relationships, and sense of direction still where the substance left them.
The evidence behind the approach is a consistent pattern rather than a single study. Treating co-occurring mental health conditions together with substance use produces better outcomes on both than treating either alone. Sleep, regular eating, and physical activity each improve mood, reduce cravings, and support the brain’s recovery in the months after use stops. Stable relationships, meaningful work, and a sense of belonging are among the strongest predictors of staying in recovery over years, which is why support that reaches into ordinary life outperforms a narrow focus on abstinence.
Its limits are real. Whole person does not mean everything, everywhere. Northwoods Haven Recovery does not provide medical care, prescribe medication, or employ dietitians, physicians, or fitness staff; the physical basics are goals you work on, not services you receive, and medication for a co-occurring condition comes from your own medical provider. It is outpatient only, so someone who needs detox or residential care needs that first, and we help find it. Someone whose needs are primarily mental health with no substance use diagnosis will be better served by a program built for that.
Combined with
Acceptance and commitment therapy is the method behind the purpose piece: getting clear on what you value and building daily behavior around it while making room for the discomfort that comes along. It is taught in group and individual counseling at both levels of care.
Who it is for
Whole person treatment is probably right for you if you
- Are living with depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder, or ADHD alongside your substance use and want both treated together
- Have been sober before and relapsed into a life that had not changed underneath the abstinence
- Are not sleeping, not eating well, or not moving, and suspect that is making the cravings and the mood worse
- Have relationships, a job, or a household you are trying to hold together or rebuild while you get treatment
- Want a recovery approach you define, whether 12-step, faith-based, secular, or your own, rather than one handed to you
Not sure yet
A comprehensive assessment answers it.
You do not pick whole person treatment from a menu; it is how every plan here is built. A chemical use assessment with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor determines your diagnosis, which co-occurring conditions are part of the picture, and the level of care that fits, here or somewhere better suited to you. From there, you and your counselor decide which areas of your life the plan reaches into first. If you already have a recent assessment, send it over and we will review it.
For families
About half our calls are from someone else.
You can ask a question without committing anyone to anything, and family involvement is part of the work when the client wants it.
How it shows up
Where whole person treatment appears at each step of care
The substance is the door you came in through. Each step widens what the plan is about, from getting stable to building a life that does not need the substance to hold it together.
Step one
Chemical use assessment
A licensed counselor takes in the whole picture: what you use and how much, but also mood, sleep, trauma history, relationships, work, and what you want. The diagnosis and level of care come from all of it.

Common questions
Questions people ask about whole person treatment
If yours is not here, ask us directly. We would rather tell you honestly that we are not the right fit than have you find out later.
What does whole person treatment actually mean?
It means the plan treats your substance use together with the mental health, physical basics, relationships, work, and purpose it is tangled up with, instead of counting days without using and calling that recovery. At Northwoods Haven Recovery it is the frame for every plan at both levels of outpatient care, delivered through group therapy and individual counseling.
Do you offer nutrition counseling, fitness programs, or medical care?
No. Northwoods Haven Recovery does not employ dietitians, trainers, or medical staff. Sleep, eating, and movement are goals you set and work on with your counselor because they affect cravings and mood, not services we provide. If you need medical or nutrition care, we will help you find it.
Is this the same as treating co-occurring mental health conditions?
It includes that and goes further. Treating depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, or ADHD alongside substance use is the mental health part. The approach also reaches into sleep, relationships, work, and purpose, the parts of life that decide whether recovery holds once the program ends.
Do I have to follow a 12-step program or believe anything in particular?
No. We are inclusive of every belief system and every recovery approach. Some people here work a 12-step program, some draw on a faith community, some are secular, and some build their own path. How you work your recovery is yours to define, and your counselor helps you find what fits.
I take medication for depression or ADHD. Does that fit here?
Yes. Medication a medical provider prescribes for a co-occurring condition is part of your picture, and people taking it are welcome. We do not prescribe or manage medication ourselves. Tell us during the assessment so your plan accounts for it.
Can my family be involved?
Yes, when you want them to be. About half of the calls we receive come from a family member, and rebuilding trust at home is part of the work for many people. Family involvement is shaped around what you and your counselor agree serves your recovery.
How long does whole person treatment take?
Most people spend about two to four months in the Intensive Outpatient Program, then ten to twelve weeks in the Relapse Prevention Program with the same counselors. The wider goals, such as sleep, relationships, and routine, are built into both. Your plan is reviewed as you go, so the timeline reflects your progress.
Does insurance cover whole person addiction treatment?
Yes. Whole person treatment is how our outpatient programs are delivered, not an add-on. Northwoods Haven Recovery is in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits.
