Whether your coverage comes through an employer, an individual plan you bought on MNsure, or Blue Plus, the plan’s Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare product, our Intensive Outpatient Program and Relapse Prevention Program in Hopkins are a covered option for adults across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities when a comprehensive assessment shows that outpatient care is the right level.

Read us the front of your card on the first call. We verify your Blue Cross benefits, explain them in plain language, and tell you what you would owe before you agree to anything.

How Blue Cross works here

Blue Cross Blue Shield covers outpatient treatment, and the assessment is the key

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota sells coverage in several forms: group plans through employers, individual and family plans including those bought on the MNsure marketplace, and Blue Plus, the product that serves Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare members. Every one of those plans includes substance use disorder and mental health benefits. If your Blue plan was issued in another state, it usually reaches Minnesota providers through the BlueCard network, and we confirm that for your specific plan rather than assuming.

What every Blue plan has in common is that coverage for a level of care follows medical necessity, and medical necessity is established by a comprehensive assessment. At Northwoods Haven Recovery that is the chemical use assessment everyone completes first, done by a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. If it supports outpatient treatment, we send the plan what it needs, request any prior authorization it requires, and tell you the result. If it shows you need detox or residential care first, your Blue Cross plan can cover that with a provider who offers it, and we help you get there.

Blue Plus, or a Blue plan from another state? Blue Plus is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota’s Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare plan, and it is handled a little differently from a commercial plan. An out-of-state Blue plan usually works through BlueCard. In both cases, tell us exactly what the card says and we sort out what applies to you.

How it works

Three steps from your first call to a plan you understand

The cost conversation happens first, not after a statement arrives. You will know where you stand before anything is scheduled.

01

You call and we verify

Give us the details from your Blue Cross card. We check your eligibility, your behavioral health benefit, and whether the plan requires prior authorization for outpatient treatment, then tell you what we found.

02

You complete the assessment

The comprehensive chemical use assessment with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor establishes your diagnosis, the level of care that fits you, and the medical necessity your plan uses to approve coverage.

03

Treatment begins, with coverage in place

If outpatient care is recommended and your plan approves it, programming starts right after intake. We manage the authorizations and progress reviews while you focus on treatment.

Worried about what it will cost?

Ask on the first call. We would rather answer it now than surprise you later.

Deductibles, copays, and coinsurance vary from one Blue Cross plan to the next. We look at yours, explain what each term means for you, and give you a clear picture before you decide.

Questions first? How admissions works

Why here

In-network with Blue Cross, and honest about everything else

Being in the network is the starting point. What you do with it is what matters.

In-network, not out-of-pocket

In-network status means your Blue Cross plan’s negotiated rates and your in-network cost sharing apply, which is usually the most affordable way to use your coverage.

Verified before you commit

You hear what your plan covers and what you would owe before your first group, not from a bill weeks later.

One assessment, two purposes

The comprehensive assessment your plan requires for authorization is the same one that decides your level of care. You do it once.

Two outpatient levels of care

The Intensive Outpatient Program and the Relapse Prevention Program, scheduled around work and family. You go home after every session.

Mental health inside the program

Co-occurring anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are treated with the same counselors, under the same benefit.

Honest about fit

If your assessment shows you need detox or residential care first, we say so and help you find a Blue Cross provider who offers it. You are welcome back after.

What insurance decides, and what it does not

Blue Cross pays for the care you need. You decide how you recover.

Your plan authorizes a level of care based on medical necessity, and it may review progress at intervals while you are in treatment. That is standard, and our team handles the paperwork. A deductible is the amount you pay before the plan starts paying. A copay is a fixed amount per visit. Coinsurance is a percentage of the cost you share with the plan. We explain which of these applies to your Blue Cross plan and what it adds up to for outpatient care.

The plan does not decide how you work your recovery, what you believe, or which approach you build your life around. That stays yours. And when coverage has limits, whether a pending authorization, a plan year that is about to reset, or a product we are not contracted with, we tell you what we know as soon as we know it instead of letting you find out later.

Substance use

Substance use disorders we treat in Minnesota

Seven groups, one outpatient path. The substance shapes the withdrawal risk and the early weeks, not the level of care or the counselors you work with.

The most common reason people call us, and the one most often hidden behind a functioning life.

Prescription opioids, heroin, and the fentanyl that now contaminates most of the illicit supply. Detox often comes first. We do not provide it, but we help you find it.

Methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription stimulants. Group work is where most of the traction comes from.

Benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other prescriptions that started as treatment. Stopping abruptly can be dangerous, so a medical provider guides the taper.

Legal does not mean harmless. Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis.

LSD, ecstasy and MDMA, ketamine, and PCP. Usually part of a wider pattern, which is what the assessment sorts out.

Inhalants, nitrous oxide, and substances that show up faster than the research does.

Common questions

Questions about using Blue Cross Blue Shield for addiction treatment

Blue Cross plans differ from one employer and one product to the next, so the first call is where your specific answer comes from. These are the questions people ask most.

LegitScript Certified

Verified addiction treatment provider

Yes. We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota plans. Give us the information from your card on the first call and we verify your benefits before anything is scheduled.

Yes. Substance use disorder treatment, including outpatient levels of care like the Intensive Outpatient Program and the Relapse Prevention Program, is a covered benefit under Blue Cross plans when a comprehensive assessment shows it is medically necessary.

In-network means the provider has a contract with your plan, so negotiated rates and your lower in-network cost sharing apply. Out-of-network providers have no contract, and your share is usually higher or the care may not be covered. Northwoods Haven Recovery is in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Blue Plus is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota’s plan for Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare members, and it is handled through the state’s public programs. Tell us your card says Blue Plus and we confirm how your coverage applies to outpatient treatment here.

Usually. Most out-of-state Blue plans reach Minnesota providers through the BlueCard network. Plans vary, so we verify yours specifically on the first call and tell you exactly what applies rather than guessing.

Yes. Co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are treated inside our outpatient programming, and that programming is what your plan’s behavioral health benefit covers.

It can, through providers who offer those levels of care. Northwoods Haven Recovery is outpatient only. If your assessment shows you need detox or residential treatment first, we help you find an in-network provider and welcome you back afterward.

Call anyway. We are also in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, HealthPartners, Medica, and UnitedHealthcare, and if you have no coverage we tell you honestly what your options are, including whether you might qualify for a public program, and help you find the right next step.
