What Adderall addiction is
A medication that works, and a dependence that can start anyway
Adderall is a prescription amphetamine that treats ADHD and narcolepsy. For people with ADHD it quiets the noise and makes ordinary tasks possible, and taken as prescribed under a doctor’s care it is safe and effective. The same drug in someone without ADHD, or in a higher dose than prescribed, produces a stimulant high: sharp focus, energy, confidence, no need for sleep or food. That is why it circulates on campuses during finals and in offices during crunch weeks, and why some people with real prescriptions end up taking more than the label says.
Adderall addiction, or more precisely stimulant use disorder involving prescription amphetamine, is a pattern you cannot control despite the cost. Dependence can begin with a legitimate prescription. Tolerance builds, the dose creeps up, the prescription runs out early, and stopping brings a crash of exhaustion and depression that makes taking more feel like the only sensible choice. It can also begin with no prescription at all, a friend’s pills or a study aid that became a daily need. Either way, the biology is the same as any other amphetamine, and so is the treatment.
Outpatient Adderall treatment at Northwoods Haven Recovery begins with a chemical use assessment that separates the medication from the misuse. If you have ADHD, that diagnosis is part of your picture, not a mark against you, and a medical provider manages the medication side while we treat the substance use. Because stimulant withdrawal is not medically dangerous for most people, programming begins right after intake.
One thing to be clear about
We are outpatient only and we are not a medical provider. We do not prescribe, adjust, or take away ADHD medication. If you take Adderall as prescribed and are here for another substance, you are welcome; tell us during the assessment so your plan accounts for it. If you are misusing it, we treat that alongside whatever a medical provider decides about your prescription.

Signs and symptoms
Signs Adderall use has crossed from treatment into misuse
Prescription misuse is easy to rationalize because the pills are legal and the effects look like productivity. If a few of these fit, an assessment is worth your time.
Behavioral
How the pills are used
Taking more than prescribed, running out early, getting pills from friends or online, crushing or snorting them, or saving doses for deadlines and then taking several at once.
Physical
What the body does
Rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, headaches, jaw clenching, weight loss, insomnia stretching into days, and a crash of heavy sleep and exhaustion when the pills run out.
Consequences
What it costs
Performance that was supposed to improve and did not, money spent on pills, doctor shopping, strained relationships, and a growing fear of what happens on a day without it.
Psychological
Mind and mood
Anxiety, irritability, or paranoia at higher doses, a hollow depression when the drug wears off, feeling like your real self only exists when medicated, and cravings tied to stress.
Withdrawal and health effects
What Adderall withdrawal feels like, and what heavy use does over time
Adderall withdrawal is not medically dangerous for most people, but it can be discouraging enough to send people back to the pills. Within a day or so of the last dose the crash arrives: deep fatigue, sleeping far more than usual, a big appetite, and a low mood that can feel like the floor dropped out. Concentration is poor, which is especially hard for people who started taking Adderall to concentrate. The acute phase typically peaks within the first few days and eases over one to two weeks. A flatter stretch of low motivation and cravings can follow for several weeks. It ends, and treatment is how you get through it.
Misused at higher doses over time, Adderall carries the risks of any amphetamine. It raises blood pressure and heart rate and stresses the heart, which matters more the longer and heavier the use. It disrupts sleep and appetite, feeds anxiety, and at high doses can produce paranoia or psychosis. It also crowds out the things that would have helped: sleep, food, rest, and an honest look at why so much has to get done. Many of these effects reverse with time off the drug.
The mental health piece is central with Adderall. Some people misuse it because their ADHD was never properly treated. Others use it to push through depression or anxiety they have not named. Still others are chasing a version of themselves that only shows up medicated. At Northwoods Haven Recovery co-occurring conditions are treated alongside the substance use, and if ADHD is part of your story, we help you get it evaluated and managed by a medical provider rather than pretending it is not there.
If someone is in danger now
Chest pain, a seizure, a very high body temperature, severe agitation, or psychosis after taking Adderall is a medical emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Counterfeit Adderall sold online or on the street may contain methamphetamine or fentanyl. Treatment here can start once the person is medically stable.
Who it is for

- Started using Adderall to study or work and now cannot get through a normal day without it
- Are a student or professional who cannot step away from school or work for weeks to get help
- Suspect the Adderall has been standing in for treatment of anxiety, depression, or undiagnosed ADHD
- Are a parent or partner who has noticed the pills disappearing faster than they should

A comprehensive assessment answers it.
A chemical use assessment determines whether your Adderall use meets criteria for a stimulant use disorder, how severe it is, and which level of care fits, here or somewhere better suited to you. If ADHD is part of the picture, we help you find a medical provider for that side. Already have a recent assessment? Send it and we will review it instead of repeating it.
For families
About half our calls are from someone else.
You can ask a question without committing anyone to anything, and family involvement is part of the work when the client wants it.
How we treat it
How Adderall addiction treatment works at Northwoods Haven Recovery
Adderall shapes the early weeks: the crash, the concentration dip, the deadline that arrives anyway. It does not change the level of care, the therapies, or the counselors. Relapse prevention runs through every level, not as a separate product.
Step one
Chemical use assessment
An hour with a licensed counselor that separates the medication from the misuse and gives you a diagnosis and a level of care. If a medical provider needs to weigh in on your prescription, we help you get there.

Dialectical behavior therapy
Skills for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and hard relationships.
Acceptance & commitment therapy

Motivational interviewing
Your reasons for changing, in your words. Nobody lectures you here.

Group therapy

Addiction counseling
One-on-one counseling with your own chemical dependency counselor.
Trauma-informed care
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what’s wrong with you.
Relapse prevention and aftercare planning run through every level of care rather than sitting off to the side, and whole-person care means mental health psychoeducation happens alongside all of it.
Substance use
Every substance use disorder we treat in Minnesota
Seven groups, one outpatient path. The substance shapes the withdrawal risk and the early weeks, not the level of care or the counselors you work with.
The most common reason people call us, and the one most often hidden behind a functioning life.
Prescription opioids, heroin, and the fentanyl that now contaminates most of the illicit supply. Detox often comes first. We do not provide it, but we help you find it.
Methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription stimulants. Group work is where most of the traction comes from.
Benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other prescriptions that started as treatment. Stopping abruptly can be dangerous, so a medical provider guides the taper.
Legal does not mean harmless. Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis.
LSD, ecstasy and MDMA, ketamine, and PCP. Usually part of a wider pattern, which is what the assessment sorts out.
Inhalants, nitrous oxide, and substances that show up faster than the research does.

Treating one and ignoring the other does not work. Northwoods Haven Recovery treats co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming. If your needs are mental-health-primary, a program built for that will serve you better, and we will help you find one.
Trauma and PTSD
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what is wrong with you.
Depression
The loop between using and feeling worse, treated from both ends at once.
Anxiety
Using to quiet it works for an hour and costs more than that.
Bipolar disorder
Care that steadies mood episodes while chemical dependency programming continues.
ADHD

Common questions
Questions people ask about Adderall addiction treatment
If yours is not here, ask us directly. We would rather tell you honestly that we are not the right fit than have you find out later.
Is it possible to be addicted to Adderall if I have a prescription?
Yes. A legitimate prescription does not prevent dependence. If you take more than prescribed, run out early, feel unable to function without it, or keep escalating despite problems, that pattern can meet criteria for a stimulant use disorder regardless of how it started. Taking it exactly as prescribed for ADHD is not an addiction.
Will you make me stop taking my ADHD medication?
No. We are not a medical provider and we do not prescribe, adjust, or discontinue medication. Decisions about your prescription belong to you and your doctor. We treat the misuse and the substance use disorder. Tell us during the assessment so your plan accounts for your prescription.
Do I need detox to stop Adderall?
Usually not. Stimulant withdrawal is exhausting and emotionally heavy but not medically dangerous for most people, so a supervised detox is rarely needed. If you also use alcohol or benzodiazepines heavily, stopping those can be dangerous and needs a medical provider. The assessment sorts this out.
How long does Adderall withdrawal last?
The crash of fatigue, heavy sleep, hunger, and low mood usually peaks within the first few days and eases over one to two weeks. Low motivation, poor concentration, and cravings can linger for several weeks after that. Symptoms tend to be longer and heavier after high-dose or long-term use.
Can I keep going to school or work during treatment?
Yes. Outpatient Adderall rehab is built for exactly that. Programming is scheduled around work and classes rather than in place of them, and most of our clients keep their jobs and their coursework throughout. Many people find the structure helps with the focus and follow-through they were using Adderall to manufacture.
How long is outpatient Adderall rehab?
Most people spend about two to four months in our Intensive Outpatient Program, then ten to twelve weeks in the Relapse Prevention Program. Your plan is reviewed as you go, so the timeline follows your progress rather than a fixed package.
Do you treat the anxiety or depression that comes with Adderall misuse?
Yes. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and undertreated ADHD are common underneath Adderall misuse, and stimulants tend to worsen anxiety and depression over time. We treat co-occurring anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, and bipolar disorder alongside chemical dependency programming, and we help you find a medical provider for ADHD evaluation if needed.
Does insurance cover Adderall addiction treatment?
We are in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits and tell you plainly what is covered before you commit.
