What alcohol addiction is

Alcohol Use Disorder Is a Medical Condition, and It Responds to Treatment

Alcohol use disorder is the clinical name for what most people call alcoholism or alcohol addiction. It is a diagnosable medical condition that exists on a spectrum from mild to severe, defined by criteria such as drinking more or longer than you intended, wanting to cut down and not managing to, spending a lot of time drinking or recovering from it, cravings, and continuing to drink despite problems at work, at home, or with your health. Two or three of those criteria is a mild disorder. Six or more is severe. All of it is treatable.

Alcohol changes the brain over time. It boosts the calming neurotransmitter GABA and suppresses the excitatory one, glutamate, so the brain adapts by turning the dials the other way. That is why tolerance builds, why stopping suddenly can be medically dangerous, and why willpower alone so rarely holds. None of this means you are weak. It means the drinking has a biology, and biology responds to treatment.

Outpatient alcohol treatment at Northwoods Haven Recovery starts with a chemical use assessment that tells you where you fall on that spectrum and which level of care fits. Most people with alcohol use disorder do not need a hospital bed. They need structure, honest people, skills for the moments that used to end in a drink, and a plan for what comes next.

One thing to be clear about

We are outpatient only. No detox, no inpatient, no residential care. Alcohol withdrawal can be medically dangerous, so if you drink heavily every day, a medical provider needs to help you stop safely before outpatient treatment begins. Call us anyway and we will help you find that care, then welcome you back.

Our space

Inside our outpatient treatment center in Hopkins, Minnesota

A safe haven should feel like one. Our suite on Green Oak Drive looks out over water and trees, and the rooms where groups meet were built to feel calm, comfortable, and homey. Not clinical, not institutional. You are more than your diagnosis here, and the space is meant to say so before anyone does.

Signs and symptoms

Signs alcohol has become more than a habit

Most people wait years longer than they needed to. If a few of these are true, a chemical use assessment is worth an hour of your time.

Behavioral

Drinking patterns

Drinking more or longer than you planned, promising yourself rules about when or how much and breaking them, hiding bottles or minimizing how much you drink when asked.

Physical

Tolerance and withdrawal

Needing more to feel the same effect, shaky hands or sweating in the morning, trouble sleeping without a drink, or drinking to stop the shakes.

Consequences

Life around the drinking

Missed obligations, arguments about drinking, a DUI, money stress, or pulling back from people and activities that used to matter.

Psychological

The inside experience

Thinking about the next drink during the day, using alcohol to manage anxiety, low mood, or sleep, and guilt or shame the morning after that the next drink quiets.

Withdrawal and health effects

What Alcohol Withdrawal Looks Like, and Why It Shouldn't Be Done Alone

For people who drink heavily every day, withdrawal usually starts six to twelve hours after the last drink with anxiety, sweating, tremor, nausea, and insomnia. Symptoms typically peak between 24 and 72 hours. A minority of people develop seizures or delirium tremens, a medical emergency marked by confusion, severe agitation, fever, and hallucinations. This is why alcohol is one of the few substances where stopping abruptly can be more dangerous than continuing, and why a medical provider should manage the first days for anyone with heavy daily use or a history of withdrawal complications.

Over years, heavy drinking raises the risk of liver disease, high blood pressure, heart problems, several cancers, pancreatitis, and memory and cognitive changes. It also worsens depression and anxiety and disrupts sleep, which is part of why drinking to feel better so reliably backfires. Many of these effects improve, and some reverse, once drinking stops and the body has time to recover.

Once you are through the first days, the longer work begins: post-acute symptoms such as low mood, irritability, poor sleep, and cravings can come and go for weeks or months. That is exactly the stretch outpatient treatment is built for. You learn what your cravings feel like before they peak, what to do with the hour that used to be happy hour, and how to handle the wedding, the funeral, and the Friday night.

If someone is in danger now

Confusion, a seizure, severe agitation, fever, or hallucinations during alcohol withdrawal are a medical emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Treatment here can start once the person is medically stable.

Who it is for

Outpatient alcohol treatment is probably the right fit if you

Not sure yet

A comprehensive assessment answers it.

A chemical use assessment determines whether you meet criteria for alcohol use disorder, how severe it is, and which level of care fits, here or somewhere better suited to you. If you need medical detox first, we will say so and help you find it. If you already have an assessment, send it over and we will review it instead of repeating it.

For families

About half our calls are from someone else.

You can ask a question without committing anyone to anything, and family involvement is part of the work when the client wants it.

Substance use

Every substance use disorder we treat in Minnesota

Seven groups, one outpatient path. The substance shapes the withdrawal risk and the early weeks, not the level of care or the counselors you work with.

The most common reason people call us, and the one most often hidden behind a functioning life.

Prescription opioids, heroin, and the fentanyl that now contaminates most of the illicit supply. Detox often comes first. We do not provide it, but we help you find it.

Methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription stimulants. Group work is where most of the traction comes from.

Benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other prescriptions that started as treatment. Stopping abruptly can be dangerous, so a medical provider guides the taper.

Legal does not mean harmless. Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis.

LSD, ecstasy and MDMA, ketamine, and PCP. Usually part of a wider pattern, which is what the assessment sorts out.

Inhalants, nitrous oxide, and substances that show up faster than the research does.

If yours is not here, ask us directly. We would rather tell you honestly that we are not the right fit than have you find out later.

Yes. Most people with alcohol use disorder do not need a hospital bed. Outpatient alcohol treatment at Northwoods Haven Recovery gives you group therapy, individual counseling, and co-occurring mental health care several days a week while you keep living at home and working. If your assessment shows you need detox or residential care first, we will tell you and help you find it.

It depends on how much and how often you drink. Heavy daily drinking can cause withdrawal that is medically dangerous, including seizures, so a medical provider should manage those first days. Occasional or moderate drinkers often do not need it. The chemical use assessment sorts this out, and we help you find detox if you need it.

Most people spend about two to four months in our Intensive Outpatient Program, then ten to twelve weeks in the Relapse Prevention Program. Your plan is reviewed as you go, so the timeline reflects your progress rather than a fixed package.

That is what outpatient care is built for. Programming is scheduled around work, school, and family rather than in place of them, and most people keep their jobs throughout.

That is a conversation, not a rule we impose. For most people who meet criteria for a moderate or severe alcohol use disorder, abstinence is the safer and more reliable goal, and we will tell you honestly what the research says about your situation. How you work your recovery is yours to define, and we are inclusive of every belief system and recovery approach.

Yes. Most people who come to us are dealing with more than alcohol. We treat co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, and bipolar disorder alongside chemical dependency programming, because treating one and ignoring the other does not work.

Tell us during your assessment. Medications that a medical provider prescribes to support recovery, such as naltrexone or acamprosate, are part of your picture, and your plan accounts for them.

We are in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits and tell you plainly what is covered before you commit to anything.
