Dual diagnosis
Two conditions. One plan. The same counselors.
Both, not one
The mood and the substance, treated together.
Most people who call us are not dealing with one thing. They are dealing with a mood or a memory and the substance they found to manage it. We treat both, at the same time, in the same room.

What outpatient mental health treatment is here
Mental health care built into addiction treatment, not bolted on afterward
Outpatient mental health treatment at Northwoods Haven Recovery means your depression, anxiety, trauma, or bipolar disorder is treated as part of your chemical dependency programming rather than referred out or saved for later. Every group includes mental health psychoeducation. Your individual counselor works on the mood, the memories, or the worry and the substance use as one picture. Skills from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy apply to both, because the thought that leads to a drink and the thought that leads to a spiral are usually the same thought.
We call this mental health treatment rather than psychiatry or counseling for a reason. We are not a psychiatric clinic. We do not prescribe, diagnose mental illness as a standalone service, or offer therapy for people without a substance use concern. We are an outpatient addiction treatment center that takes the mental health half of the picture as seriously as the substance half, because in our experience there is rarely one without the other. In the clinical world, that pairing is called dual diagnosis, or co-occurring disorders.
Everyone starts with a chemical use assessment, which establishes the substance use diagnosis and screens for the mental health conditions that so often sit beneath it. If your needs turn out to be mental-health-primary, with no substance use disorder, a program built for that will serve you better and we will help you find it. If both are present, you are exactly who this treatment is for.
Mental-health-primary needs
We treat mental health conditions alongside substance use, not on their own. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or bipolar disorder and do not have a substance use concern, a dedicated mental health program is the better fit, and we will point you toward one. Every caller leaves with resources.
Our space
Inside our outpatient treatment center in Hopkins, Minnesota
A safe haven should feel like one. Our suite on Green Oak Drive looks out over water and trees, and the rooms where groups meet were built to feel calm, comfortable, and homey. Not clinical, not institutional. You are more than your diagnosis here, and the space is meant to say so before anyone does.
The lounge
Where people land and catch their breath before group.
The group room
Three hours a day, in a circle, with people who understand.
The view
Water and treeline out every window: the northwoods, in the metro.
Another Group Room
Three hours a day, in a circle, with people who understand.
Quiet corners
Somewhere to sit with a thing before you say it out loud.
Room to breathe
Daylight and treeline out every window. No clinical fluorescence.
Signs you need both treated
Signs a mental health condition and substance use are feeding each other
When the substance is doing a job, treating only the substance leaves the job undone. If several of these are true, both deserve a plan.
Behavioral
Using to manage a feeling
Drinking or using to sleep, to calm down, to get out of bed, to get through a crowd, or to stop a memory. The substance has a purpose, and the purpose is a symptom.
Psychological
Quitting brings it roaring back
Every attempt to stop has collapsed when the anxiety, the low mood, the nightmares, or the racing thoughts came back harder than before, and using felt like the only relief.
History
A diagnosis in the background
A past diagnosis of depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder, a prescription you take or used to take, or a family history of either condition. Or a strong suspicion that no one has ever checked.
Consequences
Two problems, one life
Work, relationships, and health strained by both the mood and the substance. Treatment for one that never touched the other. A sense that you keep getting half-fixed.
What dual diagnosis means
Why treating both together works, and treating one at a time does not
Dual diagnosis is the clinical term for having a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. Co-occurring disorders means the same thing. Either way, the point is that the two conditions are not neighbors. They share biology, they share triggers, and they share a feedback loop: the mental health symptom drives the use, the use worsens the symptom, and withdrawal from almost any substance mimics anxiety, depression, or agitation, which the person reads as proof that they cannot cope without it.
For years the standard approach was to treat them in sequence: get sober first, then deal with the depression, or stabilize the mood first, then address the drinking. It rarely worked, because each condition sabotages treatment for the other. People stopped drinking, the untreated anxiety surged, and they went back. Or they started an antidepressant, kept drinking, and the alcohol undid it. Integrated dual diagnosis treatment, where one team treats both conditions in the same plan, is now widely regarded as the standard of care, and it is how Northwoods Haven Recovery works.
Here that means group therapy where mood, trauma, and cravings are discussed together, individual counseling with your own LADC, and psychoeducation about your specific condition woven through the program. Medication, when a medical provider prescribes it, is welcome: tell us during the assessment so your plan accounts for it and we can coordinate with your prescriber. The conditions we treat most often are trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and ADHD.
If you are in crisis right now
If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or call 911. Both are available every hour of every day. Treatment here can begin once you are safe, and we will be glad to hear from you.
Who it is for
Outpatient dual diagnosis treatment is probably the right fit if you
- Drink or use to manage depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, or mood swings, and want both treated in one place
- Have been through addiction treatment that never addressed your mental health, or mental health care that never addressed the drinking
- Take a psychiatric medication a medical provider prescribed and want a program that accounts for it rather than ignoring it
- Are stable enough to live at home and attend several sessions a week, and want structure that protects that stability
- Have a job, a family, or school you are not willing to step away from for weeks to get treatment
Not sure yet
A comprehensive assessment answers it.
A chemical use assessment establishes whether you meet criteria for a substance use disorder, screens for co-occurring mental health conditions, and identifies the level of care that fits, here or somewhere better suited to you. If your needs are mental-health-primary, or you are in acute psychiatric crisis, we will say so and help you find the right care. If you already have an assessment, send it over and we will review it instead of repeating it.
For families
About half our calls are from someone else.
You can ask a question without committing anyone to anything, and family involvement is part of the work when the client wants it.
How we treat it
How dual diagnosis treatment works at Northwoods Haven Recovery
The mental health condition shapes the psychoeducation and the skills you practice. It does not change the level of care, the therapies on offer, or the counselors you work with. Relapse prevention planning covers symptoms as well as substances.
Step one
Chemical use assessment
An hour with a licensed counselor that maps the substance use, screens for co-occurring mental health conditions, and lands on a level of care. If a dedicated mental health program is the better fit, we say so and help you get there.
Where everyone starts
Most people start here
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Three-hour groups with mental health psychoeducation built in, individual counseling with your own counselor, and CBT, DBT, and acceptance-based skills for both conditions. About two to four months, then you step down.
Explore IOP →
Then
Relapse Prevention Program
Ten to twelve weeks of low-intensity outpatient care with the same counselors. Your written plan names the symptoms, situations, and thoughts that raise risk for both conditions, and what to do instead of using.

Therapies
Evidence-based addiction therapies, taught as options, not prescriptions.
We’ll walk you through every approach we use and why, then build your plan around the ones that fit your beliefs and your life. No single pathway, no ideology, no judgment.
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Find the thought patterns that drive use, and learn to interrupt them.
Dialectical behavior therapy
Skills for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and hard relationships.
Acceptance & commitment therapy
Move toward what you actually value, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Motivational interviewing
Your reasons for changing, in your words. Nobody lectures you here.
Individual counseling
Your own licensed counselor, where the plan gets built and adjusted.
Group therapy
Three hours a day with people who know the terrain you’re crossing.
Addiction counseling
One-on-one counseling with your own chemical dependency counselor.
Trauma-informed care
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what’s wrong with you.
Relapse prevention and aftercare planning run through every level of care rather than sitting off to the side, and whole-person care means mental health psychoeducation happens alongside all of it.
Mental health
Co-occurring mental health conditions we treat alongside addiction
Treating one and ignoring the other does not work. Northwoods Haven Recovery treats co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming. If your needs are mental-health-primary, a program built for that will serve you better, and we will help you find one.
Trauma and PTSD
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what is wrong with you.
Depression
The loop between using and feeling worse, treated from both ends at once.
Anxiety
Using to quiet it works for an hour and costs more than that.
Bipolar disorder
Care that steadies mood episodes while chemical dependency programming continues.
ADHD
Structure and skills for adult ADHD when stimulants, alcohol, or cannabis became the coping strategy.
Something else?
If a mental health condition is tangled with substance use, tell us. We treat both together or help you find who can.
Substance use
Every substance use disorder we treat in Minnesota
Seven groups, one outpatient path. The substance shapes the withdrawal risk and the early weeks, not the level of care or the counselors you work with.
The most common reason people call us, and the one most often hidden behind a functioning life.
Prescription opioids, heroin, and the fentanyl that now contaminates most of the illicit supply. Detox often comes first. We do not provide it, but we help you find it.
Methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription stimulants. Group work is where most of the traction comes from.
Benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other prescriptions that started as treatment. Stopping abruptly can be dangerous, so a medical provider guides the taper.
Legal does not mean harmless. Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis.
LSD, ecstasy and MDMA, ketamine, and PCP. Usually part of a wider pattern, which is what the assessment sorts out.
Inhalants, nitrous oxide, and substances that show up faster than the research does.

Common questions
Questions people ask about dual diagnosis and mental health treatment
If yours is not here, ask us directly. We would rather tell you honestly that we are not the right fit than have you find out later.
What is dual diagnosis treatment?
Dual diagnosis treatment addresses a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder, at the same time and in the same plan. At Northwoods Haven Recovery that means one set of counselors treats both, with mental health psychoeducation running through the whole program.
Why do you call it mental health treatment instead of dual diagnosis?
Because most people search for the condition they feel, not the clinical term. Dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders mean the same thing: a substance use disorder plus a mental health condition. Mental health treatment here is the mental health half of that pairing, always treated alongside the substance half.
Do you treat mental health conditions without addiction?
No. We are an outpatient addiction treatment center, and every client has a substance use diagnosis. If your needs are mental-health-primary, a program built for that will serve you better, and we will help you find it. If depression, anxiety, trauma, or bipolar disorder is tangled with drinking or drug use, you are exactly who we treat.
Which mental health conditions do you treat alongside addiction?
Trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are the ones we treat most often. Other conditions come up in the assessment, and we will tell you honestly whether outpatient care here fits or whether a different program should come first.
Do you prescribe psychiatric medication?
No. We do not prescribe or manage medication of any kind. Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anxiety medications, and ADHD medications are a medical provider’s domain. If a prescriber has you on one, you are welcome here. Tell us during the assessment so your plan accounts for it and we can coordinate.
Can I start if I am in a mental health crisis?
Acute crisis needs a higher level of care first. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 or call 911. Once you are safe and stable enough to live at home and attend several sessions a week, outpatient dual diagnosis treatment here can begin, and we will help you get from one to the other.
How is dual diagnosis treatment different from regular addiction treatment?
In practice, at Northwoods Haven Recovery, it is not a separate track. Mental health psychoeducation and co-occurring care are built into every group and every individual session, because most clients need them. What changes is the emphasis: the skills, the relapse prevention plan, and the conversations with your counselor are shaped around your specific condition.
Does insurance cover dual diagnosis treatment?
We are in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits and tell you plainly what is covered.
