Addiction Treatment Programs in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Outpatient levels of care that fit around your life, from intensive outpatient to relapse prevention. When you call, we answer.
Northwoods Haven Recovery offers outpatient addiction and mental health treatment programs for adults across Minneapolis and the greater Twin Cities. Every program here is outpatient: you come to us during the day or evening and go home afterward. Not sure which level of care fits? A chemical use assessment answers that, and every caller leaves with resources.
Not sure where you fit?
Tell us what is going on and we will point you to the right program, here or elsewhere.
Which outpatient program is right for you?
Recovery is not one program. It is a path with a few levels of care along it, and the right starting point depends on where you are today. Someone coming straight out of residential treatment usually needs more structure than someone who has been stable for a few months and wants to protect what they have built.
Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is the most structured level of outpatient care we offer, for about two to four months. Our Relapse Prevention Program is the step-down: a lighter low-intensity outpatient schedule for ten to twelve weeks with the same counselors, so the skills you built in IOP hold up in ordinary life.
A chemical use assessment is how we decide together. It looks at what you are using, for how long, what has already been tried, and what else is going on. Then we tell you plainly what we recommend, whether that is one of our programs or somebody else’s.

Substance use
Substance use disorders we treat in Minnesota
Addiction is a disease, never a moral failing, and you are more than your diagnosis. Northwoods Haven Recovery treats alcohol and drug use disorders in an outpatient setting, with the same person-centered approach no matter what brought you here. This isn’t a complete list. If what you’re struggling with isn’t here, call us. We’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit.
Mental health
New
Co-occurring mental health conditions we treat alongside addiction
Substance use and mental health rarely arrive separately. Northwoods Haven Recovery now treats co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming, so you don’t have to choose which one to work on first. If your needs are mental-health-primary rather than co-occurring with a substance use diagnosis, a program built for that will serve you better, and we’ll help you find one.
Trauma and PTSD
Trauma-informed care that accounts for what happened to you while you treat substance use.
Depression
Support for low mood, hopelessness, and the drinking or use that often travels with them.
Anxiety
Skills for panic, worry, and the urge to self-medicate, taught alongside your program.
Bipolar disorder
Care that steadies mood episodes while chemical dependency programming continues.
ADHD
Structure and skills for adult ADHD when stimulants, alcohol, or cannabis have become the coping strategy.
Something else?
Tell us what is going on. If a mental health condition is tangled with substance use, we treat both together.
Therapies
Evidence-based addiction therapies, taught as options, not prescriptions.
We’ll walk you through every approach we use and why, then build your plan around the ones that fit your beliefs and your life. No single pathway, no ideology, no judgment.
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Find the thought patterns that drive use, and learn to interrupt them.
Dialectical behavior therapy
Skills for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and hard relationships.
Acceptance & commitment therapy
Move toward what you actually value, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Motivational interviewing
Your reasons for changing, in your words. Nobody lectures you here.
Individual counseling
Your own licensed counselor, where the plan gets built and adjusted.
Group therapy
Three hours a day with people who know the terrain you’re crossing.
Addiction counseling
One-on-one counseling with your own chemical dependency counselor.
Trauma-informed care
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what’s wrong with you.
Relapse prevention and aftercare planning run through every level of care rather than sitting off to the side, and whole-person care means mental health psychoeducation happens alongside all of it.

Common questions
Questions about our addiction treatment programs
If yours is not here, ask us directly. Every caller leaves with resources, whether or not they end up in one of our programs.
What addiction treatment programs does Northwoods Haven Recovery offer?
Two levels of outpatient care: an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that runs about two to four months, and a Relapse Prevention Program, the ten-to-twelve-week low-intensity outpatient step-down. Co-occurring mental health treatment runs alongside both. We also provide chemical use assessments, DUI and court-ordered assessments, and addiction counseling.
How do I know which program is right for me?
A chemical use assessment decides it. It looks at what you are using, for how long, what has already been tried, and what else is going on, then we recommend a level of care. Most people who are new to treatment or stepping down from residential care start in IOP. People who have finished IOP or are already stable usually fit the Relapse Prevention Program.
Are all of your programs outpatient?
Yes. Every program at Northwoods Haven Recovery is outpatient. You come to us for treatment during the day or evening and go home afterward. We do not provide detox, inpatient, or residential care. If you are in active withdrawal, call us anyway and we will help you find a detox provider, then welcome you back.
What is the difference between IOP and the Relapse Prevention Program?
Time and structure. IOP is a three-hour group most programming days plus one-on-one counseling, for about two to four months. The Relapse Prevention Program is a lighter schedule for ten to twelve weeks, clinically called low-intensity outpatient, with the same counselors. Most people move from one to the other.
Can I start in the Relapse Prevention Program without doing IOP first?
Sometimes. If your assessment shows you are stable and need less structure, or you have recently completed a higher level of care elsewhere, the Relapse Prevention Program can be the right starting point. The assessment decides, not the calendar.
Does insurance cover these programs?
We are in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits and tell you plainly what is covered before you commit to anything.
