How addiction and mental health therapies work together here

No single therapy treats addiction. Cognitive behavioral therapy changes the thinking that leads to a drink. Dialectical behavior therapy gives you skills for the emotion that arrives faster than thinking. Acceptance and commitment therapy helps you make room for a craving without acting on it. Motivational interviewing helps you find your own reasons to change. Group therapy is where all of it gets practiced with people who understand.

Every one of these runs through both of our outpatient levels of care, the Intensive Outpatient Program and the Relapse Prevention Program, and every one of them treats mental health alongside the substance, because most people who come to us are dealing with both. Trauma-informed care is not a separate therapy so much as the way every group and session is run.

How you work your recovery is yours to define. We are inclusive of every belief system and every recovery approach, so the plan you leave with is one you actually chose. We rise together.

Assessments and services

Assessments and services that get you into the right care

Everything begins with an assessment. These are the services around our two levels of outpatient care.

The hour that turns a worry into a diagnosis and a level of care. Where everyone starts.

Individual counseling with your own licensed alcohol and drug counselor, inside every level of care here.

Substance use

Substance use disorders we treat in Minnesota

Addiction is a disease, never a moral failing, and you are more than your diagnosis. Northwoods Haven Recovery treats alcohol and drug use disorders in an outpatient setting, with the same person-centered approach no matter what brought you here. This isn’t a complete list. If what you’re struggling with isn’t here, call us. We’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit.

Mental health

New

Co-occurring mental health conditions we treat alongside addiction

Substance use and mental health rarely arrive separately. Northwoods Haven Recovery now treats co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming, so you don’t have to choose which one to work on first. If your needs are mental-health-primary rather than co-occurring with a substance use diagnosis, a program built for that will serve you better, and we’ll help you find one.

Yes. Every approach we use treats co-occurring mental health conditions such as trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and ADHD alongside chemical dependency programming. Treating one and ignoring the other does not work.

Both. Group therapy runs most programming days in the Intensive Outpatient Program, and you also have individual counseling with your own licensed alcohol and drug counselor. The therapies above run through both settings.

Yes. CBT, DBT, ACT, and motivational interviewing are among the most studied approaches in addiction treatment, and group therapy and trauma-informed care are standard practice. We teach them as options, not prescriptions, and we tell you honestly what the research says about each.
