Rehab That Accepts Medicaid in Minneapolis
Outpatient addiction and mental health treatment for adults on Minnesota Medicaid (Medical Assistance), verified before you commit to anything.
Northwoods Haven Recovery is in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, and it was the first network we joined, on purpose. Medical Assistance covers outpatient substance use disorder treatment when a comprehensive assessment shows it is needed, which means our Intensive Outpatient Program and Relapse Prevention Program in Hopkins are within reach for adults across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities who might assume treatment is out of their budget.
Give us your plan information on the first call. We verify your benefits and tell you plainly what is covered and what, if anything, you would owe, before you commit to anything.

How Medicaid works here
Minnesota Medicaid covers outpatient addiction treatment, and we take it
Minnesota’s Medicaid program is called Medical Assistance, and for most people it is delivered through a managed care plan such as Blue Plus, HealthPartners, Medica, or UCare, or directly through the state. Substance use disorder treatment is a covered benefit. Coverage for a specific level of care follows from a comprehensive assessment by a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, which is the same chemical use assessment everyone at Northwoods Haven Recovery starts with.
In practice that means the assessment does two jobs at once: it tells you which level of care fits, and it establishes the medical necessity your plan looks for. If outpatient treatment is recommended, we submit what the plan needs and tell you what it covers. If you need detox or residential care first, Medicaid covers those with other providers, and we help you find one.
Not sure if you have Medicaid? Many people are covered through a plan with a different name on the card. If you have MinnesotaCare or a Blue Plus, HealthPartners, Medica, or UCare card, tell us and we will sort out what it is. If you have no coverage at all, call anyway; we will tell you honestly what your options are.
How it works
Three steps from your first call to knowing what is covered
Nobody starts treatment here without knowing what their plan covers. Verification is part of the first conversation.
01
You call and we verify
Tell us your plan and member information. We check your Medicaid benefits and eligibility and tell you what we find before you commit to anything.
02
You complete the assessment
A comprehensive chemical use assessment with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor establishes your diagnosis, the level of care that fits, and the medical necessity your plan looks for.
03
Treatment starts, covered
If outpatient care is recommended and approved, programming starts right after intake. We handle the plan paperwork so you can focus on the work.
Cost worries?
Say so on the first call. It is the most common question we get.
Medicaid was the first network we joined because treatment should be accessible to anyone who wants it. Tell us your situation and we will tell you plainly what your coverage means for you.
Questions first? How admissions works
Why here
Medicaid was the first network we joined. That was the point.
Plenty of programs accept Medicaid on paper. We built the program around it.
In-network from the start
Minnesota Medicaid was the first insurance network Northwoods Haven Recovery joined, before any commercial plan.
Verified before you start
You know what is covered before your first session, not after a bill arrives.
Assessment does the paperwork
The comprehensive assessment your plan requires is the same one that decides your level of care. One appointment, both jobs.
Two outpatient levels of care
Intensive outpatient and the Relapse Prevention Program, scheduled around work and family, both outpatient.
Mental health included
Co-occurring anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are treated alongside substance use in the same program.
Honest about fit
If Medicaid would cover a level of care we do not offer, such as detox or residential treatment, we say so and help you find it.
What insurance decides, and what it does not
Your plan pays for treatment. It does not choose it.
Coverage depends on medical necessity, which is why the assessment comes first. Medicaid plans authorize the level of care the assessment supports, and they review progress along the way. That is normal, and we handle the paperwork. What the plan does not do is decide how you work your recovery. That stays yours.
We will also be honest when coverage has limits. If your plan has changed, if eligibility has lapsed, or if a prior authorization is pending, we tell you what we know and what it means for your timeline rather than letting you find out later.
- Benefits verified on the first call, in plain language
- Plan paperwork and authorizations handled by our team
- No surprise bills: we tell you what you would owe before you start
What Medicaid covers here
Two levels of outpatient care, and everything inside them
Every program at Northwoods Haven Recovery is outpatient, and both levels of care are billed to Minnesota Medicaid when your assessment supports them.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Three-hour groups most programming days, individual counseling with your own counselor, and co-occurring care. About two to four months.
Relapse Prevention Program
Ten to twelve weeks of low-intensity outpatient care with the same counselors once IOP has done its work.
Conditions we treat
Alcohol, opioids, stimulants, benzodiazepines, marijuana, and more, always with the same outpatient path.
Co-occurring mental health care
Anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD treated alongside substance use, not after it.
Substance use
Substance use disorders we treat in Minnesota
Seven groups, one outpatient path. The substance shapes the withdrawal risk and the early weeks, not the level of care or the counselors you work with.
The most common reason people call us, and the one most often hidden behind a functioning life.
Prescription opioids, heroin, and the fentanyl that now contaminates most of the illicit supply. Detox often comes first. We do not provide it, but we help you find it.
Methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription stimulants. Group work is where most of the traction comes from.
Benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other prescriptions that started as treatment. Stopping abruptly can be dangerous, so a medical provider guides the taper.
Legal does not mean harmless. Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis.
LSD, ecstasy and MDMA, ketamine, and PCP. Usually part of a wider pattern, which is what the assessment sorts out.
Inhalants, nitrous oxide, and substances that show up faster than the research does.
Not on the list?
This list is not a filter. Call us and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit, and help you find who is if we are not.
Mental health
Co-occurring mental health conditions we treat alongside addiction
Treating one and ignoring the other does not work. Northwoods Haven Recovery treats co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming. If your needs are mental-health-primary, a program built for that will serve you better, and we will help you find one.
Trauma and PTSD
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what is wrong with you.
Depression
The loop between using and feeling worse, treated from both ends at once.
Anxiety
Using to quiet it works for an hour and costs more than that.
Bipolar disorder
Care that steadies mood episodes while chemical dependency programming continues.
ADHD
Structure and skills for adult ADHD when stimulants, alcohol, or cannabis became the coping strategy.
Something else?
If a mental health condition is tangled with substance use, tell us. We treat both together or help you find who can.

Common questions
Questions about using Medicaid for addiction treatment
Coverage details vary by plan and change over time, so the first call is where the real answer comes from. These are the questions people ask most.
Does Northwoods Haven Recovery accept Minnesota Medicaid?
Yes. We are in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, called Medical Assistance, and it was the first network we joined. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits before anything starts.
Does Medicaid cover outpatient rehab in Minnesota?
Yes. Substance use disorder treatment, including outpatient levels of care like our Intensive Outpatient Program and Relapse Prevention Program, is a covered Medical Assistance benefit when a comprehensive assessment shows it is medically necessary.
I have Blue Plus, HealthPartners, Medica, or UCare through the state. Is that Medicaid?
Usually, yes. Most Minnesotans on Medical Assistance are enrolled through a managed care plan, and the card carries that plan’s name. Tell us what your card says and we will sort out exactly what coverage you have.
Will I have to pay anything?
It depends on your plan. Many people on Medical Assistance pay little or nothing for outpatient treatment, but we do not assume. We verify your benefits on the first call and tell you plainly what, if anything, you would owe before you commit.
Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
Your plan may require authorization for a level of care, and the comprehensive assessment is what supports it. We handle that paperwork and tell you where things stand so you know your timeline.
What if I do not have insurance at all?
Call anyway. We will tell you honestly what your options are, including whether you may qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, and help you find the right next step even if it is not with us.
Does Medicaid cover detox or residential treatment?
It can, with providers who offer those levels of care. Northwoods Haven Recovery is outpatient only. If your assessment shows you need detox or residential care first, we help you find a provider and welcome you back after.
Does Medicaid cover mental health treatment alongside addiction?
Yes. Co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are treated inside our outpatient programming, and that programming is what your plan covers.
