Rehab That Takes Medica Insurance in Minneapolis
Outpatient addiction and mental health treatment in-network with Medica, with who administers your behavioral health benefit sorted out on the first call.
Northwoods Haven Recovery is in-network with Medica, a Minnesota-based health plan that covers people across the Twin Cities through employers, individual and family plans, Medicare products, and Medical Assistance. Medica plans include coverage for substance use disorder and mental health treatment, so when a comprehensive assessment shows outpatient care is the right level, the Intensive Outpatient Program and Relapse Prevention Program at our Hopkins offices are within your coverage.
One thing about Medica is worth knowing up front: the behavioral health part of your plan may be administered by a partner rather than by Medica directly. That changes nothing about whether we can help. Tell us what your card says and we sort out who administers your benefit, verify it, and tell you what you would owe before anything begins.

How Medica works here
Medica covers outpatient treatment, once we know who holds the benefit
Medica is based in Minnesota and offers coverage in several forms: group plans through employers, individual and family plans, Medicare plans for people over 65 or with a qualifying disability, and products for Medical Assistance members. Substance use and mental health treatment fall under the behavioral health benefit on each of those plans. With Medica, that benefit is sometimes administered by a separate behavioral health partner, which means the phone number and the authorization process for treatment can be different from the ones for a clinic visit. Members are often unaware of this until they need it.
That is why our first call with a Medica member starts with the card. We identify who administers your behavioral health benefit, confirm your eligibility with them, and check whether prior authorization is needed for outpatient care. Coverage for a level of care then follows medical necessity, established by the comprehensive chemical use assessment everyone at Northwoods Haven Recovery completes with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. If it supports outpatient treatment, we handle the submission. If it shows you need detox or residential care first, Medica can cover that with a provider who offers it, and we help you find one.
Not sure who handles your mental health coverage? You are not supposed to know. The back of a Medica card often lists a separate number for behavioral health, and that tells us most of what we need. If it does not, we find out for you. Either way, you make one call, to us, and we do the rest.
How it works
Three steps from your first call to knowing exactly where you stand
With Medica the first step has an extra piece, identifying the benefit administrator, and we do it for you. Nothing gets scheduled until you know what is covered.
01
You call, we identify and verify
Read us your Medica card. We determine who administers your behavioral health benefit, confirm your eligibility with them, check for prior authorization requirements, and tell you what we found.
02
You complete the assessment
A comprehensive chemical use assessment with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor establishes your diagnosis, the level of care that fits you, and the medical necessity your plan relies on to approve treatment.
03
Treatment starts, covered
When outpatient care is recommended and approved, programming starts right after intake. We manage authorizations and progress reviews with Medica or its administrator while you focus on the work.
Cost on your mind?
Bring it up first. It is the question we expect, and the one we answer most carefully.
Medica plans split costs between you and the plan in different ways. Once we know your plan and its administrator, we explain your share in plain language so you can decide with the full picture.
Questions first? How admissions works
Why here
In-network with Medica, and we untangle the details so you do not have to
Insurance should not be the hardest part of getting help. With Medica, a little extra sorting is sometimes needed, and that is our job, not yours.
In-network with Medica
Contracted rates and your in-network cost sharing apply, which is the most affordable way to use the coverage you already have.
We find the administrator
Whether Medica or a behavioral health partner holds your benefit, we identify it, call it, and report back. You make one call.
Coverage confirmed before you start
You know what your plan covers and what your share would be before your first session, not when a statement arrives.
One assessment, two purposes
The comprehensive assessment Medica or its administrator needs for authorization is the same one that decides your level of care.
Mental health inside the program
Co-occurring anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are treated with the same counselors, under the same behavioral health benefit.
Honest about fit
If your assessment shows you need detox or residential treatment first, we tell you and help you find a Medica provider who offers it. You are welcome back after.
What insurance decides, and what it does not
Medica decides what it pays for. It does not decide who you become.
Your plan, or the partner that administers its behavioral health benefit, authorizes a level of care based on medical necessity and may review progress along the way. That is normal, and we handle it. When we go over your plan you will hear three terms. A deductible is what you pay before the plan begins paying. A copay is a fixed amount for a visit. Coinsurance is the share of a cost you and the plan divide by percentage. We explain which apply to outpatient treatment on your Medica plan and what they add up to for you.
What no plan can do is decide how you work your recovery, what you believe, or what a good life looks like once treatment is over. That is yours. And when there is a limit worth knowing about, a pending authorization, a benefit that resets with the plan year, or a Medica product we are not contracted with, we say so the moment we know rather than letting you find out later.

What Medica covers here
Two levels of outpatient care, and everything treated inside them
Everything at Northwoods Haven Recovery is outpatient, and both levels of care are billed to your Medica plan or its behavioral health administrator when your assessment supports them.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Three-hour groups most programming days, individual counseling with your own licensed alcohol and drug counselor, and co-occurring mental health care. About two to four months.
Relapse Prevention Program
Ten to twelve weeks of lower-intensity outpatient care with the same counselors after IOP, built around a written relapse prevention plan.
Conditions we treat
Alcohol, opioids and fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepines, marijuana, and other substances, all on the same outpatient path.
Co-occurring mental health care
Anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, and ADHD treated alongside substance use, by the same team.
Substance use
Substance use disorders we treat in Minnesota
Seven groups, one outpatient path. The substance shapes the withdrawal risk and the early weeks, not the level of care or the counselors you work with.
The most common reason people call us, and the one most often hidden behind a functioning life.
Prescription opioids, heroin, and the fentanyl that now contaminates most of the illicit supply. Detox often comes first. We do not provide it, but we help you find it.
Methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription stimulants. Group work is where most of the traction comes from.
Benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other prescriptions that started as treatment. Stopping abruptly can be dangerous, so a medical provider guides the taper.
Legal does not mean harmless. Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis.
LSD, ecstasy and MDMA, ketamine, and PCP. Usually part of a wider pattern, which is what the assessment sorts out.
Inhalants, nitrous oxide, and substances that show up faster than the research does.
Not on the list?
This list is not a filter. Call us and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit, and help you find who is if we are not.
Mental health
Co-occurring mental health conditions we treat alongside addiction
Treating one and ignoring the other does not work. Northwoods Haven Recovery treats co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming. If your needs are mental-health-primary, a program built for that will serve you better, and we will help you find one.
Trauma and PTSD
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what is wrong with you.
Depression
The loop between using and feeling worse, treated from both ends at once.
Anxiety
Using to quiet it works for an hour and costs more than that.
Bipolar disorder
Care that steadies mood episodes while chemical dependency programming continues.
ADHD
Structure and skills for adult ADHD when stimulants, alcohol, or cannabis became the coping strategy.
Something else?
If a mental health condition is tangled with substance use, tell us. We treat both together or help you find who can.

Common questions
Questions about using Medica for addiction treatment
Medica plans differ by employer, product, and administrator, so the first call is where your real answer comes from. These are the questions we hear most.
Does Northwoods Haven Recovery accept Medica insurance?
Yes. We are in-network with Medica. Give us the information on your card during the first call and we identify who administers your behavioral health benefit, verify it, and tell you what is covered before anything is scheduled.
Does Medica cover outpatient rehab in Minnesota?
Yes. Substance use disorder treatment, including outpatient levels of care such as the Intensive Outpatient Program and the Relapse Prevention Program, is part of the behavioral health benefit on Medica plans when a comprehensive assessment shows it is medically necessary.
Why does my Medica card list a different number for mental health?
Medica sometimes uses a separate partner to administer behavioral health benefits, and that number reaches the partner. It does not change your coverage. Read us the card and we contact the right administrator on your behalf.
What is the difference between in-network and out-of-network?
In-network means the provider has a contract with your plan, so negotiated rates and lower in-network cost sharing apply. Out-of-network providers have no contract, and your share is usually much higher or the care may not be covered. Northwoods Haven Recovery is in-network with Medica.
Does Medica require prior authorization for outpatient treatment?
Some Medica plans and administrators do, and the comprehensive assessment supports the request. We check during the first call, handle the paperwork, and tell you where things stand so you know your timeline.
Does Medica cover mental health treatment along with addiction?
Yes. Co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are treated inside our outpatient programming, and that programming is what your Medica behavioral health benefit covers.
Does Medica cover detox or residential treatment?
It can, through providers who offer those levels of care. Northwoods Haven Recovery is outpatient only. If your assessment shows you need detox or residential care first, we help you find an in-network provider and welcome you back afterward.
What if I do not have Medica, or any insurance at all?
Call anyway. We are also in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, and UnitedHealthcare, and if you have no coverage we tell you honestly what your options are, including whether a public program may be open to you, and help you find the right next step.
