We are an outpatient program, not a detox or inpatient facility.
Northwoods Haven Recovery does not provide detox, inpatient, or residential care. If you’re in active withdrawal, that’s a medical situation and it needs to come first. Call us anyway and we’ll help you find a detox provider in your area.
When you’re through it and ready for outpatient care, we’ll be here. That’s the promise: when you call, we answer, and if we can’t help, we find you who can.
Is this the right fit?
Who outpatient addiction treatment at Northwoods Haven Recovery is good for
Addiction looks different for everyone, and so does the right level of care. Outpatient treatment is the right fit for a lot of people, and not the right fit for some. We’d rather tell you honestly on the first call than have you find out later. Here is how we think about it.
Outpatient treatment is likely a good fit if
- You're managing substance use while working, going to school, or caring for your family, and you need treatment that works around those commitments.
- You've finished a residential or inpatient program and want structured outpatient support as you return to daily life.
- You have a stable place to live and want to do the work of recovery, on your own terms and with people who get it.
- You're dealing with a mental health condition alongside substance use, such as trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or ADHD.
- You have Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, Medica, or another plan you'd like us to check.
We'll find you the right care elsewhere if
- You're in active withdrawal. That is a medical situation and it needs to come first. We'll help you find a detox provider, then welcome you back.
- Your mental health needs are primary rather than co-occurring with a substance use diagnosis. A program built for that will serve you better.
- Your relapse risk or home environment calls for residential care right now. We don't provide it, but we know who does.
- You have serious physical health needs that require medical monitoring during treatment.
- You're under 18. We treat adults only.
Not sure where you land? Call anyway. A chemical use assessment answers the question, and every caller leaves with resources. Call (952) 243-8700

Intake
Programming starts immediately after intake. Already have an assessment? Send it over and we’ll review it.
Northwoods Haven Recovery exists to make treatment accessible quickly to those that need it, from personal experience of having to wait to help a loved one.
It once took eleven days to get one person into treatment. He only made it because someone put him up in a hotel. That wait is the reason this program exists, and the reason we answer the phone.
Substance use
Substance use disorders we treat in Minnesota
Addiction is a disease, never a moral failing, and you are more than your diagnosis. Northwoods Haven Recovery treats alcohol and drug use disorders in an outpatient setting, with the same person-centered approach no matter what brought you here. This isn’t a complete list. If what you’re struggling with isn’t here, call us. We’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit.
Mental health
New
Co-occurring mental health conditions we treat alongside addiction
Substance use and mental health rarely arrive separately. Northwoods Haven Recovery now treats co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming, so you don’t have to choose which one to work on first. If your needs are mental-health-primary rather than co-occurring with a substance use diagnosis, a program built for that will serve you better, and we’ll help you find one.
Trauma and PTSD
Trauma-informed care that accounts for what happened to you while you treat substance use.
Depression
Support for low mood, hopelessness, and the drinking or use that often travels with them.
Anxiety
Skills for panic, worry, and the urge to self-medicate, taught alongside your program.
Bipolar disorder
Care that steadies mood episodes while chemical dependency programming continues.
ADHD
Structure and skills for adult ADHD when stimulants, alcohol, or cannabis have become the coping strategy.
Something else?
Tell us what is going on. If a mental health condition is tangled with substance use, we treat both together.
Therapies
Evidence-based addiction therapies, taught as options, not prescriptions.
We’ll walk you through every approach we use and why, then build your plan around the ones that fit your beliefs and your life. No single pathway, no ideology, no judgment.
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Find the thought patterns that drive use, and learn to interrupt them.
Dialectical behavior therapy
Skills for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and hard relationships.
Acceptance & commitment therapy
Move toward what you actually value, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Motivational interviewing
Your reasons for changing, in your words. Nobody lectures you here.
Individual counseling
Your own licensed counselor, where the plan gets built and adjusted.
Group therapy
Three hours a day with people who know the terrain you’re crossing.
Addiction counseling
One-on-one counseling with your own chemical dependency counselor.
Trauma-informed care
Care that accounts for what happened to you, not what’s wrong with you.
Relapse prevention and aftercare planning run through every level of care rather than sitting off to the side, and whole-person care means mental health psychoeducation happens alongside all of it.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions about treatment at Northwoods Haven Recovery
If your question isn’t here, ask us directly. We’d rather tell you honestly that we’re not the right fit than have you find out later.
What programs do you offer?
Northwoods Haven Recovery offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that runs two to four months, and a Relapse Prevention Program, the ten-to-twelve-week low-intensity outpatient step-down, as part of the same continuum of care. Alongside those: treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions, chemical use assessments including DUI and court-ordered, and addiction counseling.
Do you offer detox or inpatient treatment?
No. Northwoods Haven Recovery is an outpatient program. We do not provide detox, inpatient, or residential care. If you’re in active withdrawal, that needs medical attention first. Call us anyway and we’ll help you find a detox provider in your area, then we’ll be here when you’re ready for outpatient care.
How soon can I start?
It starts with a call, then a chemical use assessment to determine your diagnosis and the right level of care, then intake. Programming starts immediately after intake. If you already have a comprehensive assessment, send it over, along with progress notes or a discharge summary if you have them, and we’ll review it and schedule intake from there.
What does a week actually look like?
A typical programming day is a three-hour group. Depending on the day and the week, you’ll also have a one-hour individual session with your chemical dependency counselor. The schedule is individualized, and it’s built to work around a job, school, or family rather than replace them.
Do you treat mental health conditions too?
Yes. We treat co-occurring mental health conditions alongside chemical dependency programming, and mental health psychoeducation runs through the whole program. If your needs are mental-health-primary rather than co-occurring with a substance use diagnosis, a program built for that will serve you better, and we’ll help you find one.
Will my insurance cover treatment?
We’re in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, the first network we joined, and with major commercial plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. We’ll verify your benefits and tell you plainly what your plan covers before you commit to anything.
Can I keep working while in treatment?
That’s the point of outpatient care. Recovery shouldn’t require you to disappear from the life you’re trying to protect: your job, your family, your routine. We build the schedule around those commitments.
What if Northwoods Haven Recovery isn't the right fit?
Then we find you who is. Every caller leaves with resources, whether or not they end up here. That’s the promise: when you call, we answer, and if we can’t help, we find you who can.
