DUI Assessments in Minneapolis, Minnesota
A clinical chemical use evaluation for Minnesota DWI court, probation, and licensing requirements, done by a licensed counselor and written up clearly.
Northwoods Haven Recovery provides DUI assessments for adults across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities from our outpatient center in Hopkins. One appointment with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, a clear recommendation, and the written documentation the court, your probation officer, or the licensing office has asked you for.
No lectures and no assumptions. The assessment asks what is actually going on and reports what it finds, whether that points to education, treatment, or neither.

What it is
A clinical evaluation, not a verdict
A DUI assessment, often called a DWI assessment or chemical use assessment in Minnesota, is a clinical evaluation that looks at your alcohol and drug use, identifies whether a substance use disorder is present and how severe it is, and recommends an appropriate level of education or treatment. It is commonly required after a DWI as part of court, probation, or driver’s license reinstatement.
It is separate from the traffic stop, the testing, and anything the court decides. Our job is an accurate picture of where you are, written up clearly and on time. Sometimes the answer is that no treatment is needed. When it is, we say so.
What the appointment includes
- A confidential clinical interview with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor
- A review of your alcohol and drug use history and the incident that brought you here
- Standardized screening tools, not a quick checklist
- Questions about prior incidents, health, and current life stability
- Screening for co-occurring mental health concerns
- Written recommendations and the documentation you have been asked to provide
What to bring: any paperwork from the court, your attorney, your probation officer, or Driver and Vehicle Services, plus your insurance card if you have one. Not sure what is being asked of you? Call and we will help you work it out before the appointment.
How it works
Three steps, and a clear answer at the end
Deadlines are usually part of why people call us, so scheduling is the first thing we talk about.
01
You call and we schedule you
We confirm what documentation you need and who it goes to, answer your questions, and schedule the appointment as soon as we can.
02
You come in for the evaluation
A structured clinical interview and standardized screening tools covering your use history, the incident, current risk factors, and overall stability. Usually 60 to 90 minutes.
03
You get documentation and a recommendation
Written up clearly in the form courts and licensing offices typically ask for. If education or treatment is recommended, we explain the options honestly, here or elsewhere.
Working against a date?
Tell us your deadline and we will work backward from it.
Most people calling us have a court date, a probation check-in, or a license reinstatement deadline. Say what yours is on the first call and we will schedule around it as best we can.
Questions first? How admissions works
Why here
Some assessments end with paperwork. Ours end with a path.
Where you complete the assessment matters, because the recommendation follows you into whatever comes next.
A thorough clinical review
Structured interviews and standardized screening tools, so the recommendation reflects your situation rather than a template.
Documentation that is clear
Written recommendations in the form courts, probation officers, and licensing offices typically ask for, delivered when you need them.
Handled with respect
Assessments are confidential, and nobody here treats you like the charge instead of the person.
Scheduled around your deadline
Tell us the date you are working against and we schedule as soon as we can.
Co-occurring concerns screened
Anxiety, depression, and trauma get looked at too, not left for someone else to find.
Treatment with the same team
If outpatient care is recommended, you can do it here with the counselor who already knows your story.
Being honest in the room
The assessment works better when you tell the truth in it
Most people walk in planning to say as little as possible. That is understandable, and it usually backfires. An assessment built on a minimized history produces a recommendation that does not fit, and a recommendation that does not fit is the one that falls apart three months later.
We are not the court, we are not the prosecutor, and we are not looking for a reason to recommend more than you need. We are looking for the accurate answer, because that is the only version that helps you.
- Your counselor is a licensed clinician, not an arm of the court
- Records are released only where you authorize it in writing
- Recommendations reflect what the evaluation found, nothing more
If treatment is recommended
You would not have to start over somewhere else
A recommendation is not a sentence. If the assessment points to treatment, Northwoods Haven Recovery can pick up your care with the same team, on a schedule built around work and family. If a different program fits better, we help you find it.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Three-hour groups most programming days, plus your own counselor. About two to four months.
Relapse Prevention Program
Ten to twelve weeks of low-intensity outpatient care once IOP has done its work, or when you are stable and want to protect it.
Conditions we treat
Alcohol, opioids, stimulants, benzodiazepines, marijuana, and more, always with the same outpatient path.
Co-occurring mental health care
Anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, and ADHD treated alongside substance use, not after it.
Assessments and services
Assessments and services that get you into the right care
Everything begins with an assessment. These are the services around our two levels of outpatient care.
The hour that turns a worry into a diagnosis and a level of care. Where everyone starts.
A clinical evaluation for Minnesota DWI court, probation, and licensing requirements, with written documentation.
Individual counseling with your own licensed alcohol and drug counselor, inside every level of care here.
Therapies
Evidence-based therapies we use, taught as options
Seven approaches, one plan built with you. Your counselor teaches you what each one does and you decide what belongs in your recovery lifestyle.
Catch the thought that comes before the drink or the drug, test it, and practice a different move before Friday.
Skills for intense emotion, urges, and relationships: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness.
Make room for the craving or the feeling without acting on it, and build a life around what you value.
Find your own reasons to change, at your own pace. Includes motivational enhancement therapy, the structured short form.
The same people each session, so accountability is real. Where most of the traction in outpatient treatment comes from.
Every group and session run on predictability, choice, and safety, because most people carry something older than the substance.
Mental health, relationships, work, and purpose treated as one picture, with a recovery lifestyle you define.
You do not choose a therapy from a menu. Your counselor teaches you all of them as options and the plan uses what works for you.

Common questions
Questions about DUI assessments
Court and licensing requirements differ, so verify the specifics with your attorney or court contact. We can tell you how the assessment itself works.
Why do courts ask for a DUI assessment?
It provides an objective clinical review of your substance use history and risk level, and whether education or treatment may be appropriate. The outcome is a written recommendation and documentation reflecting what the evaluation found, which supports the court, probation, or licensing process you are in.
How long does a DUI assessment take?
Most appointments run about 60 to 90 minutes. Timing varies with your history, the screening tools used, and what documentation is needed.
What happens during the appointment?
A confidential clinical interview with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, a review of your alcohol and drug use history, and standardized screening tools. You may be asked about patterns of use, prior incidents, health, and current stability. The counselor then prepares recommendations and the documentation you need.
Is the assessment part of the DWI investigation?
No. The investigation involves the traffic stop, officer observations, field sobriety testing, and chemical testing. The assessment is a separate clinical evaluation that may be required afterward.
Will the assessment say I need treatment?
It says what the evaluation finds. Some assessments recommend education, some recommend outpatient treatment, and some recommend neither. We do not decide that in advance, and we are not looking for a reason to recommend more than you need.
Who sees the results?
You do, and anyone you authorize in writing, such as your attorney, probation officer, or the licensing office. Records are not released anywhere else.
Does insurance cover a DUI assessment?
Often, yes. We are in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits and tell you plainly what is covered and what is not.
What if treatment is recommended?
Then you already have a team that knows your story. Northwoods Haven Recovery offers outpatient treatment only, an Intensive Outpatient Program and a Relapse Prevention Program, scheduled around work and family. If a different level of care fits better, we help you find it.
