Cannabis use disorder
Legal in Minnesota. Still a real diagnosis when it takes over.
Legal is not the question
If you have tried to cut back and cannot.
Marijuana is legal for adults in Minnesota, and most people who use it never develop a problem. Some do. If you have tried to cut back and cannot, that is worth taking seriously, whatever the law says.

What marijuana addiction is
Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis, legal or not
Cannabis use disorder is the clinical name for a pattern of marijuana use you cannot control despite what it is costing you. The criteria are the same ones used for alcohol or any other substance: using more or more often than you meant to, wanting to cut back and not managing it, spending much of the day high or planning to be, cravings, giving up things you used to enjoy, and continuing despite problems with work, school, relationships, or your mood. Two or three criteria is a mild disorder. Six or more is severe. Legality has nothing to do with the diagnosis.
The marijuana available today is not the marijuana of a generation ago. Flower is far stronger, and concentrates, vape cartridges, dabs, and edibles deliver THC at levels that make tolerance, dependence, and anxiety or paranoia far more likely, especially with daily use. People who started young or use every day are at higher risk. So are people using cannabis to sleep, calm down, or get through the day, because it gradually becomes the only tool they have.
Outpatient marijuana treatment at Northwoods Haven Recovery starts with a chemical use assessment that tells you honestly whether this is a disorder and how severe it is. Cannabis withdrawal is not medically dangerous, so programming begins right after intake. What you get is structure, people who take the problem seriously without moralizing, and skills for the evenings and the sleepless nights that used to end in a bowl or a cartridge.
One thing to be clear about
We are outpatient only. No detox, no inpatient, no residential care, no medical services. Cannabis withdrawal does not require medical supervision, so most people start here directly. If you also drink heavily every day or use benzodiazepines, that part may need a medical provider first, and we will help you find one.

Signs and symptoms
Signs marijuana has become more than a habit
Because cannabis is legal and widely used, problems with it are easy to dismiss. If several of these fit, an assessment gives you a straight answer.
Behavioral
How you use
Using first thing in the morning or throughout the day, needing stronger products to feel anything, promising to take a break and not managing it, and hiding how much or how often from people close to you.
Physical
What the body shows
Tolerance that keeps climbing, trouble sleeping without it, irritability and restlessness on days you skip, a persistent cough from smoking or vaping, and appetite that swings with use.
Consequences
What it costs
Motivation that faded, plans that never quite happen, money spent at the dispensary that was meant for something else, and school, work, or relationships that have quietly slipped.
Psychological
Mind and mood
Anxiety or paranoia while high, flatness or low mood when not, memory and focus that feel dulled, and a sense that cannabis is the only thing that lets you relax or fall asleep.
Withdrawal and health effects
What cannabis withdrawal feels like, and what daily use does to mood and mind
Cannabis withdrawal is real, and it is not medically dangerous. For daily or near-daily users, symptoms usually begin within a day or two of stopping: irritability, anxiety, restlessness, trouble falling and staying asleep, vivid dreams, reduced appetite, and sometimes headaches, sweating, or stomach discomfort. Symptoms typically peak in the first week and fade over two to four weeks, with sleep often the last thing to settle. None of this needs a hospital. All of it is uncomfortable enough that many people go back to using just to feel normal, which is why structured support in those weeks matters.
The longer-term effects are mostly about the mind. Heavy cannabis use dulls memory, attention, and motivation in ways that are easy to miss until you stop and notice the difference. Cannabis and anxiety have a complicated relationship: the drug relieves anxiety in the moment and worsens it over time, and high-potency products can trigger panic attacks and paranoia even in people who used to find it calming. Daily use, particularly of high-THC products, also raises the risk of psychosis in people who are vulnerable to it. Smoking and vaping irritate the lungs, and heavy long-term use can cause cyclic vomiting.
Cannabis also tends to sit on top of something else: anxiety, depression, trauma, or insomnia that was never addressed. At Northwoods Haven Recovery co-occurring mental health conditions are treated alongside the cannabis use from the start, because taking away the thing you were using to cope without offering anything in its place rarely holds. If a medical provider has prescribed something for anxiety or sleep, tell us during the assessment so your plan accounts for it.
If someone is in danger now
Cannabis alone is very unlikely to cause a fatal overdose, but severe panic, chest pain, confusion, or psychosis after using, especially high-potency concentrates or edibles, deserves an emergency department visit. If someone stops responding or their breathing slows, assume another substance is involved and call 911.
Who it is for
Outpatient marijuana treatment is probably the right fit if you
- Have tried to take a break from cannabis more than once and never made it past the irritable, sleepless first week
- Use every day, or most of the day, and have watched motivation, memory, or plans quietly erode
- Are using cannabis for anxiety, sleep, or low mood and suspect it has become part of the problem
- Have a job, school, or a family you are not willing to leave for weeks to get help
- Have been told by a partner, a parent, or a court that this is an issue and want an honest opinion rather than a lecture

A comprehensive assessment answers it.
A chemical use assessment determines whether your cannabis use meets criteria for a disorder, how severe it is, and which level of care fits, here or somewhere better suited to you. It also screens for other substances and for the mental health conditions that so often sit underneath. Already have a recent assessment? Send it and we will review it rather than repeat it.
For families
About half our calls are from someone else.
You can ask a question without committing anyone to anything, and family involvement is part of the work when the client wants it.
How we treat it
How marijuana addiction treatment works at Northwoods Haven Recovery
Cannabis shapes the first weeks: the sleeplessness, the irritability, the evening ritual with nothing in its place. It does not change the level of care, the therapies, or the counselors. Relapse prevention runs through every level.
Step one
Chemical use assessment
An hour with a licensed counselor that turns a nagging question into a clear answer: is this a disorder, how severe, and what level of care fits. If anything else needs medical care first, we help you find it.

Substance use
Every substance use disorder we treat in Minnesota
Seven groups, one outpatient path. The substance shapes the withdrawal risk and the early weeks, not the level of care or the counselors you work with.
The most common reason people call us, and the one most often hidden behind a functioning life.
Prescription opioids, heroin, and the fentanyl that now contaminates most of the illicit supply. Detox often comes first. We do not provide it, but we help you find it.
Methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription stimulants. Group work is where most of the traction comes from.
Benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and other prescriptions that started as treatment. Stopping abruptly can be dangerous, so a medical provider guides the taper.
Legal does not mean harmless. Cannabis use disorder is a real diagnosis.
LSD, ecstasy and MDMA, ketamine, and PCP. Usually part of a wider pattern, which is what the assessment sorts out.
Inhalants, nitrous oxide, and substances that show up faster than the research does.

Common questions
Questions people ask about marijuana addiction treatment
If yours is not here, ask us directly. We would rather tell you honestly that we are not the right fit than have you find out later.
Can you really be addicted to marijuana?
Yes. Cannabis use disorder is a recognized diagnosis with the same criteria used for alcohol and other substances: loss of control, cravings, continued use despite harm, tolerance, and withdrawal. Most people who use cannabis do not develop it, but daily users and people who started young are at meaningfully higher risk, especially with today’s high-potency products.
Marijuana is legal in Minnesota. Do I still need treatment?
Legality does not change the diagnosis or the harm. Alcohol is legal too. If you have tried to cut back and cannot, if cannabis is affecting your mood, sleep, motivation, or relationships, or if people around you are worried, an assessment is worth an hour. We will tell you honestly whether treatment fits.
What are the symptoms of marijuana withdrawal?
Irritability, anxiety, restlessness, trouble sleeping, vivid dreams, reduced appetite, and sometimes headaches or stomach discomfort. Symptoms usually start within a day or two of stopping, peak in the first week, and fade over two to four weeks. Cannabis withdrawal is uncomfortable but not medically dangerous, so no detox is required.
Do I need detox before starting outpatient marijuana treatment?
No. Cannabis withdrawal does not require medical supervision, so most people start programming at Northwoods Haven Recovery right after intake. The exception is when alcohol or benzodiazepines are also in the picture, since stopping those abruptly can be dangerous. The assessment sorts this out.
Does marijuana cause anxiety or help it?
Both, which is the trap. Cannabis often relieves anxiety in the moment and worsens it over time, and high-potency products can trigger panic and paranoia even in people who once found it calming. Many of our clients started using to manage anxiety and found the anxiety got worse. We treat co-occurring anxiety alongside the cannabis use.
How long is outpatient marijuana rehab?
Most people spend about two to four months in our Intensive Outpatient Program, then ten to twelve weeks in the Relapse Prevention Program. Your plan is reviewed as you go, so the timeline follows your progress rather than a fixed package.
Are edibles, vapes, and dabs different from smoking when it comes to addiction?
The substance is the same, but the dose is often much higher. Concentrates, vape cartridges, and dabs deliver THC at many times the strength of flower, and edibles are easy to overshoot. Higher potency means tolerance, dependence, and anxiety or paranoia develop faster. Treatment is the same whatever the product.
Does insurance cover marijuana addiction treatment?
We are in-network with Minnesota Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthPartners, UnitedHealthcare, and Medica. Give us your plan information on the first call and we will verify your benefits and tell you plainly what is covered before you commit.
